Folks, if you require direct secure communications with someone on Mastodon, take it off Mastodon and use a secure E2E messenger.
Wire if you only want to provide a username to the other party.
Signal if you are comfortable with sharing your phone number with the other party.
@staticsafe @ocdtrekkie I use the DM on Twitter for group chat a lot. not because "private" but because cozier and easier to have actual conversation isolated from the main timelines.
@frankiesaxx @ocdtrekkie yeah, that's fair. It definitely reduces the friction to getting a more private conversation going. As long as folks are aware of the actual privacy of such features. A false sense of security is a terrible thing to have.
@lieselotte never heard about it, can't comment on it.
@staticsafe it's all webrtc.
maybe @nk also has recommendations? 😉
I'm legit curious - where does "Darkroom" fall within this context?
It was recommended to me, but as usual, I'm skeptical. Anyone?
@Averly I've never heard of Darkroom, so i can't comment.
@staticsafe Conversations is good, but you have to pay for the latest version or compile it yourself. An out of date version is freely available on F-Droid.
@staticsafe i haven't heard of wire before. how can i trust it?
@loam you can give this independent security review of it a look:

@staticsafe hmm ok. i'll give it a try.
@staticsafe I honestly have never seen a social network as a good place for private chat, even if it does have a decent private chat feature.
