seems like YouTube performance over my HE IPv6 tunnel has taken a nosedive, got another complaint from my sister
disabled AAAA record returns for youtube.com and googlevideo.com for now
(I use cdhowie's netflix-no-ipv6-dns-proxy project for this, its meant for use with Netflix domains but its pretty easy to modify it to strip AAAAs from other domains)
what I'm saying is:
Bell, get off your ass and give me native IPv6 connectivity already
my choices for native IPv6 connectivity at home right now:
Rogers 250/20 DOCSIS3 cable - this is what I used to have
TekSavvy DSL - slow as fuck and with all the problems that come with DSL
so right now Bell 1G/100M FTTH is > than having native IPv6 connectivity
I should stop talking about my internet connection options before I get envious Americans in my mentions ehh
"You have more than one choice?! wow"
let me tell y'all Americans something, my options are only this good because I live in a major city
its not so good if you aren't in the major cities
Canada like the USA is huge
@staticsafe tbf i think that's the case in most countries
@staticsafe
Why do you need internet if you have Canada? ;)
@staticsafe my parents moved out into the Lanark highlands, where the only internet available was satellite or dial-up. They built a cell phone tower out there a few years back, but fixed wireless is even more expensive than satellite.
@staticsafe aahhh yea- but major US cities I’ve you one choice too depending on where in a city you move too- and it’s still just one (whatever the housing complex works with)
@staticsafe we may not have a choice, but at least we have our freedom. 🦅 🇲🇾 🔫 ✝️
@staticsafe the rogers 1000/30 is silly but works pretty well
@bea that download/upload asymmetry >_<
@staticsafe run an HE tunnel :shrug:
@wxcafe HE has a tunnel endpoint in Toronto but it is higher latency than the one in Chicago because lol Bell doesn't peer at TOR-IX
traffic to the HE Toronto tunnel goes Toronto -> Chicago -> Toronto
@staticsafe @wxcafe Although HE doesn't have an IPv6 endpoint in Vancouver they do have services at a local DC. Telus only peers with HE in Seattle so it seems it goes Vancouver->Seattle->Vancouver and back again...

@staticsafe start.ca is an extremely good ISP if it's in your area. used it in windsor. cheap af prices, extremely stable, awesome support, and they resell rogers iirc. not sure if they have IPv6 but i'm assuming yes
@ctrlaltdog yeah they use Rogers' cable infra.
same with TekSavvy cable services
@ctrlaltdog or to be more specific, they use the same physical infrastructure but not the same network as Rogers, they have their own backbones/networks
@staticsafe for the moment I'm using start.ca 60/10 on rCable lines. They don't have native ipv6 yet, but offer 6rd which works well. Does Rogers do native ipv6 nowadays?
@kepstin Yes, Rogers (at least in my region) is doing native IPv6. Prefix assignment is done using DHCPv6-PD.
@kepstin they have also started deploying IPv6 on their mobile LTE network as well, not sure to what extent that deployment is at right now.
@staticsafe Bell has 1000/1000 for biz services now.
No idea on pricing.
@staticsafe Wow Bell doesn't have IPv6? Aren't they bad enough already?
@tonf They don't. That is however the only complaint I have about their FTTH service. I have had no other issues with it.
@staticsafe Have Fibe TV? I hear everything is downscaled to 720p.
And you know, their policies and pricing.
@tonf no, I don't have any TV services with them (or with anyone else).
As for their pricing, none of the competition is much better unfortunately, especially when it comes to FTTH where they don't have any competition in my area.
What policies are you referring to?
@staticsafe Various. Most recent occurrence is that copyright coalition they formed.
And yeah, price is getting bad on many others as well. Argh!
@staticsafe same tbh
Aliant managed to pump glass into the ground in bumfuck New Brunswick *and* deploy it to the hicks out there, yet after being bought by Ma Bell, them and their host can't manage to give me a nice v6 subnet?
I miss my competent local ILEC!
@feld yes they are, they do provide v6 connectivity for their enterprise customers which of course comes with an enterprise pricing :P
@staticsafe It's going to take a while for IPv6 to catch on. Unfortunately, I think ISPs would prefer we abuse private IPv4 space and wreck the ability for devices behind the "router" to directly talk to the rest of the internet. Me, I can't wait for those days to be over.
@staticsafe They do! All you need is a commercial fiber connection.
In other words, preaching the choir on here, buddy.
@feld yeah I know, I use a BGP tunnel with my own IP space that Netflix doesn't block
if I used one of HE's regular tunnels I would have to strip AAAAs for Netflix all the time
@staticsafe can't you change to a different ISP that has decent IPv6, or do they all suck?
it is unfortunate but without native v6, use of the tunnel for Netflix and YouTube is going to result in degraded or at least lower performance than using v4 which pulls from my ISP's CDN caches
